Question 1.1

Let’s talk about take off. What is the difference between V1 and V2?

Follow-up Prompt

Why can’t pilots abort takeoff after the airplane reaches V1?

ICAO 4 Model Answer

First of all, V1 is the decision-making speed.

If the pilots have a problem and need to abort the takeoff, they must do it before reaching V1.

On the other hand, V2 is the safe climbing speed.

It happens after lift-off, when the aircraft is about 35 feet above the runway threshold.

In short, V1 is related to the decision to stop or continue, while V2 is related to safe climb performance.

ICAO 5 Model Answer

To begin with, V1 is the takeoff decision speed.

In other words, it is the speed by which the crew must decide whether to reject or continue the takeoff.

If a critical failure comes up before V1, the crew may reject the takeoff.

On the other hand, V2 is the takeoff safety speed, which ensures the required climb performance after liftoff.

In practical terms, V1 is about the decision to stop or continue, whereas V2 is about safe climb performance.

Question 1.2

How was your first flight as a pilot?

Follow-up Prompt

How did you feel after your first flight?

ICAO 4 Model Answer

My first flight as a private pilot student was a great experience.

At first, I felt a little concerned about my performance because it was an important moment in my life.

However, everything went as I expected.

After the flight, the instructor briefed me on the main details and gave me feedback for my improvement.

In the end, it was a very positive experience and a big step in my training.

ICAO 5 Model Answer

Looking back, my first flight as a pilot was a mix of excitement and nervousness, because it was a milestone moment in my life.

To be honest, I had butterflies in my stomach before the flight.

Luckily, I was accompanied by an experienced instructor who guided and supported me.

As the flight went on, his guidance helped ease the initial jitters and gave me more confidence.

By the end of the flight, it had become a remarkable experience and an important step in my aviation journey.

Question 1.3

What kind avionics do you think aircraft will be equipped with in the future?

Follow-up Prompt

Do you think first officers will be working from the ground in the future? Why(not)?

ICAO 4 Model Answer

It is difficult to know exactly what the future will bring, but aircraft may have more advanced avionics.

In my opinion, pilots may have clearer displays and more automatic systems to support decision-making.

For this reason, aircraft may become easier to operate and more efficient.

Even so, I don't think first officers will work from the ground in the near future, because human supervision will still be necessary for safety.

ICAO 5 Model Answer

Based on what we can already see today, I believe aircraft will be fitted out with more advanced and highly connected avionics in the future.

In practical terms, pilots may rely on faster data transmission, smarter flight management systems, and more intuitive displays.

On top of that, some aircraft might be fitted with augmented reality tools, which could improve situational awareness during complex phases of flight.

Therefore, decision-making could become faster, clearer, and more accurate, especially when crews have to deal with high workload.

Nevertheless, I don't think first officers will work completely from the ground in the near future, because human supervision in the cockpit will still be essential for safety.
